Ramadan 2025: The Longest Fast in the World!!!

A group of Muslim men sitting together in a mosque for Iftar during Ramadan. A man in the foreground pours tea from a traditional brass teapot into a cup. The text in Urdu reads, "دنیا کا طویل ترین روزہ!!!" (The longest fast in the world!!!). The atmosphere reflects unity and spirituality during Ramadan.

As Muslims around the world prepare for Ramadan 2025, the number of fasting hours will vary based on location. Some will fast for over 20 hours, while others will fast for just 11 to 12 hours. This difference happens because of how long the sun stays in the sky in different parts of the world.

Why Do Fasting Hours Differ?

  • Countries near the North Pole experience very long daylight hours, making fasting much longer.
  • Countries near the equator have nearly equal day and night lengths, so fasting hours remain moderate.
  • Countries in the Southern Hemisphere have shorter daylight hours during this time of the year, meaning shorter fasting hours.

Countries with the Longest Fasting Hours

Fasting will be the longest in Northern Europe and places close to the Arctic Circle:

  • Sweden (Kiruna) – 20 hours 30 minutes
  • Norway – 20 hours 30 minutes
  • Greenland (Nuuk) – 20 hours
  • Iceland (Reykjavik) – 19 hours 59 minutes
  • Finland (Helsinki) – 19 hours 9 minutes

Other locations with long fasting hours include:

  • Canada (Ottawa) – 16.5 hours
  • Algeria – 16 hours 44 minutes
  • Scotland (Glasgow) – 16.5 hours
  • Switzerland (Zurich) – 16.5 hours
  • Italy (Rome) – 16.5 hours
  • Spain (Madrid) – 16 hours
  • United Kingdom (London) – 16 hours
  • France (Paris) – 15.5 hours

In places like Sweden’s Kiruna, the sun barely sets for a few minutes. In some northern locations, it doesn’t set at all, making fasting extremely difficult. In such cases, Muslims usually follow the fasting hours of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, or the nearest reasonable city.

Countries with the Shortest Fasting Hours

In the Southern Hemisphere, where daylight is shorter during this time of the year, fasting will be much easier:

  • Johannesburg, South Africa – 11-12 hours
  • Montevideo, Uruguay – 11-12 hours
  • Christchurch, New Zealand – 12 hours
  • Buenos Aires, Argentina – 12 hours
  • King Scott, Chile – 11-12 hours
  • Ciudad del Este, Paraguay – 11-12 hours
  • Harare, Zimbabwe – 12-13 hours
  • Brasilia, Brazil – 12-13 hours

Other locations with relatively shorter fasting hours include:

  • Islamabad, Pakistan – 12-13 hours
  • Dubai, UAE – 13 hours
  • New Delhi, India – 12.5 hours
  • Jakarta, Indonesia – 12.5 hours
  • Madina, Saudi Arabia – 13 hours
  • New York, USA – 13 hours (approx.)
  • Istanbul, Turkey – 13 hours (approx.)

A Global Experience

The number of fasting hours may differ, but the spirit of Ramadan remains the same. Whether fasting for 11 hours or 20 hours, Muslims worldwide share this time of reflection, devotion, and spiritual growth.
