Pakistan and Bangladesh Trade Reopens

Direct trade between Pakistan and Bangladesh resumes after five decades, with the first government-to-government cargo shipment departing from Port Qasim, Karachi.

In a big step forward, Pakistan and Bangladesh have started trading directly with each other after 50 years. The first official shipment of goods left Port Qasim in Karachi on Saturday.

A ship called MV Sibi, owned by the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC), is carrying 26,000 tons of rice to Bangladesh. It is expected to reach Chittagong on March 4.

This is the first time since 1971, when Bangladesh became independent, that the two countries have officially traded goods.

In early February, the two countries made a deal. Bangladesh agreed to buy 50,000 tons of rice from Pakistan through the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP). This shipment is the first part of that deal. The remaining 25,000 tons will be sent in early March.

Relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have improved recently, especially after high-level talks between the two countries. Last year, when Sheikh Hasina Wajid was removed from power, Bangladesh’s interim government reached out to Pakistan, and Pakistan responded positively.

This trade deal is an important step in rebuilding ties between the two nations.
